Basketball World Toronto hosted their Spring Youth Day on June 2nd, 2018.
Over 100 participants came out to the event for a day filled with basketball fun. Each division played several friendly competitive games with each other and was concluded with an awards ceremony.
Jr. NBA Competition was held at St. Anthony Catholic School where the Raptors beat out the Cavs in the finals 14 - 6 with Leo leading all scorers with 8 points.
Over at St. Mary Catholic Academy, our Skill Development divisions faced off against one another in their respective age groups. The day started off with girls tournament, where the Lynx of our 8-11 division went undefeated for the day winning 12 - 6 over team Sky in the finals. For our girls in the 12-15 division, the Mystics came roaring back and closed out a nail-biter in the finals against the Stars winning 15-14.
Later on, it was time for the boys to come in. With the younger boys, the Celtics beat out the Cavs to win the championship with a score of 10-8. With the older boys, in the final tournament of the day, the Rockets won the championship, with Dorian hitting a buzzer beater at the end of the game.
Finally, our Competitive division events were held at Loretto College. Two different age divisions, U11 and U13 came in to play their finals having finished their regular season games. After an exciting day, our U11 division crowned The Men as their champion after they defeated Pink Fluffy Unicorns in the finals. Mateus Barros earned MVP honours leading all scorers with 20 points. Later on, at the U13 tournament, six teams competed to win the championship, and it was the Bulls who clinched the title as they controlled the pace of the entire game. It was a fun-filled day as we saw the growth and development in all of our kids and hope they continue to evolve into great leaders and athletes.
Our youth day also involved a raffle that players and parents were able to participate in by purchasing tickets at the venues. After each tournament, there was a raffle draw which the players ended up winning numerous prizes from sports gear, raptors apparel, and passes to various activities around the city.
There were also two grand prizes for the raffle; Woodbine Entertainment Dinner for 4 and an authentic signed Serge Ibaka jersey. The prizes went to the family of Krishni Ghose and Lucas Barros, respectively. We congratulate all the raffle winners and hope they enjoy their prizes.
BWT's Youth Day is a celebratory event at the end of each Youth Season and is held four times a year. Every participant of BWT's programs is invited to come out to the tournament for some friendly competition with each other. Aside from taking part in the festivities, these kids have an opportunity to display their newfound skills and talents in front of many parents, staff, and volunteers.
