TEAM COMMITMENT

  • Rep basketball is a more significant time commitment than the other BWT programs for both players and their families.
  • Players can expect 1-2 practices per week and then 1-2 games on OBL Game Weekends (sometimes the final weekend of OBL games has 3-4 games on that weekend).
  • In addition, each team will make the decision to participate in exhibition games and a weekend tournament (3-4 games over one weekend] during the season pending team/player/parent approval.
  • Depending on the age group, the season starts in late September / early October and ends in April to late May.
  • It is expected that each player attends as many rep practices and rep games within reason to have the best experience and development.

TRYOUTS

  • We plan to offer a team for all interested players but after the pandemic, there are lots of limitations holding things back.
  • As a result, depending on the number of interested players, most teams will have tryouts.
  • We believe in having at least 10-12 and in some cases the maximum allowable 15 players on a team to ensure the team can compete all season.
  • Team selection is dependent on many factors, not just playing ability - some of those factors include coachability, hard work, effort, and the ability to learn the mental side of the game.

PRACTICES

  • Teams practice 2 times/week for a total of ~40-45+ practices - depending on the team usually during weeknights pending gym availability.
  • The schedule depends on where gym space can be booked and based on coach availability.
  • The final number of practices will vary from team to team and will depend on a lot of factors that can be influenced by the players on the team's ability to attend practices.
  • Practice schedules for each team will be available on the BWT SportsEngine App which is available for iPhone or Android.

EXHIBITION GAMES

  • The team may choose to play in one or more exhibition games.
  • These exhibition games will be agreed upon and scheduled by each team coach and games could be on weeknights or weekends usually within the GTA.
  • The final number of games will vary from team to team and will depend on a lot of factors that can be influenced by the players on the team's ability to attend games.
  • PLEASE NOTE - The cost of exhibition games is IN ADDITION to the rep fees and will be determined based on the cost of the game the team agrees to attend.  These fees are approximately ~$15-40 per game per player based on the age of the team, shot clocks or not, and the length of the game (run time or stop time affects the referee costs) and the cost of all coaches time.
  • The exhibition game schedule for each team will be available on the BWT SportsEngine App which is available for iPhone or Android.

LEAGUE GAMES

  • The team plays in a series of exhibitions and regular games ~15 - 20 total depending on the team and season.
  • Teams will plan to play in the Ontario Basketball League (OBL) or a comparable league which usually accounts for 12 games minimum.
  • Games are mainly on the weekends (some weeknight games may exist) and are usually within the GTA but can be as far as an hour to an hour and a half from Toronto.
  • The final number of games will vary from team to team and will depend on a lot of factors that can be influenced by the players on the team's ability to attend games.
  • PLEASE NOTE - The cost of regular league games (not exhibition games) is INCLUDED in the rep fees you have paid once selected for a team.
  • The game schedule for each team will be available on the BWT SportsEngine App which is available for iPhone or Android.

TOURNAMENT(S)

  • The team may choose to attend a tournament(s) in place of exhibition games or etc.
  • Tournaments are on the weekends and are usually within the GTA but can be as far as an hour to an hour and a half from Toronto.
  • Teams play three to four games throughout a weekend tournament.
  • PLEASE NOTE - The cost of attending tournaments is IN ADDITION to the rep fees and will be determined based on the cost of the tournament the team agrees to attend.  These fees are approximately ~$60 - 130 per tournament per player based on the age of the team, shot clocks or not, the length of the game (run time or stop time which affects the referee costs), and the cost of all coaches' time.
  • The game schedule for each team will be available on the BWT SportsEngine App which is available for iPhone or Android.

OBA CHAMPIONSHIP / END OF SEASON GAMES

  • During the Fall/Winter season, teams will plan to play in the Basketball Ontario Championship / Ontario Cup (Fall/Winter Season Only).
  • PLEASE NOTE - The cost of the OBA Championship is INCLUDED in the rep fees you have paid once selected for a team.

GAME PLAY

U10-U12 Teams
  • For the U10-U12 teams, BWT follows the Basketball Ontario Fair Play Rules guaranteeing roughly equal playing time for each child throughout the game.
U13-U17 Teams
  • At the U13 and above levels, there are no such rules imposed by Basketball Ontario and guaranteed playing time is NOT promised.
  • BWT's philosophy is to maximize the opportunity to play but we also do recognize that most players at the older age levels expect and want a compromise to try to win games which can mean sacrifices for all to succeed.
  • For teams U13 to U17 levels, this element is left to each coach’s discretion. In certain games, an individual player may see very little playing time based on attendance at practices, other games, learning of concepts, etc, and with the goal of the team's succeeding in every game.   So please keep this in mind.

COACHES

  • All BWT Rep Coaches are certified, and police screened each year.  our coaches focus on player development while balancing team success and work to ensure all players have a good experience.
  • Please keep in mind that due to the challenging environment, coaching certification and available courses to be completed can vary from season to season and even year to year.  If you have more questions, please ask as the coaching situation in Ontario is vary disjointed.

PLAYER & PARENT CONDUCT

  • As noted above, team selection is dependent on many factors. A very important factor is conduct. We expect and require players to be respectful of their teammates, coaches, referees, opposing teams, gymnasiums, etc. Practices are very important and strong effort is required at each and every practice. As playing time in games is not evenly distributed, practice is an opportunity for maximum participation and should be viewed as being as important as a game.
  • We also expect that parents will set a positive example with their own conduct, both at practices and games (although many parents do not observe the practices, which is totally acceptable). Positive encouragement and acceptance of mistakes made are examples of the good behavior that we ask parents to display. No criticism of referees and minor officials (e.g. scorekeepers) is appreciated. Constructive feedback provided professionally is always encouraged.  Everyone is expected to try their best as we do understand that the game can be emotional.

REP TEAM COST INFORMATION

After the impact of the pandemic, BWT DOES NOT have company sponsorship or financial donors to cover parts of the cost of Rep Teams.  The ever-increasing costs of sports programming, combined with the fact that we PAY all of our coaches (and their related Rep expenses) and work to our ensure coaches are certified and trained, require our Rep program costs to be slightly higher than other clubs.  Be careful of promises made (by other organizations).  Do your due diligence to learn and do not assume anything when information is missing from websites. We plan to provide what we commit to and this differentiates us from other clubs that make promises but then fail to meet expectations.  If you have more questions, please contact us at youth@bwt.ca.

Please Note - Previous BWT Players who have a BWT Silver/White/Black Reversible Jersey are eligible for a $10.00 Refund once the player has been selected for a Rep Team.  When doing your registration for the Team Fees, please enter HAVEBWTJERSEY and you will be discounted $10.00 off your Rep Team Player Registration Fees.
