Basketball World Toronto's Spring Youth Day
During Basketball World Toronto's most recent Spring Youth Day, CBC News came to interview Michael Reio, and two of our girl's competitive players, about girls and women in basketball and what our organization is trying to do to provide a place for them to play as well as succeed in their pursuit of the sport.
As the Raptors fight to win the NBA Finals and make Canadian and basketball history, it's our young players that will be affected the most. "What my coach is telling me to do, I see the Raptors do all the time,” said Ocol, one of the players in our Girls Competitive program, when asked by the CBC. These players are role models for them, but they are also men. Unfortunately, for our current girl's players, there are not only very few female basketball players represented in the media, but also very few avenues for young women to pursue the sport - even at a non-professional level. We pride ourselves on our current girls and women programs but we know that that’s not enough. Michael stated that "our goal is to try and just spread the word and give them an avenue to play basketball.” Hopefully, we can lead by example and inspire other youth groups and schools to better advertise and fund their girl's sports programs.
While the basketball fever is spreading across Canada, it’s our Girls Programs that need the boost the most - as well as the attention. For this reason, it is so incredible that our organization was able to get our message across while also having the opportunity to lead by example.
