BWT Women's Summer League 2010 - League Championship Game

BWT - Women's Summer League

BWT's Women's Summer League 2010 Championship Game was held on Monday August 16th, 2010 at the Air Canada Centre - Toronto Raptors Practice Court. The game featured the Winter 2010 Champions Sparks as they matched up against Purple Reign and battle it out for BWT`s Women`s Summer League 2010 Championship.

The game was a competitive match between two very strong teams. The Sparks were led by their regular season MVP - Anne-Marie King and their scoring leader Katie Murray (#9). Purple Reign was led by their Captain Valerie Samson (#33), their shooting guard Katarina Tichopad (#23) and their point guard Caroline McGrath (#21). The game was very competitive early on as both teams distributed the ball evenly and scored inside and outside. As the first half came to a close, Purple Reign had built a small lead 23-14 but the Sparks looked to get back into the mix over half.

As the second half got under way the Sparks started to break down Purple Reign's defense. The combo of Katie Murray (#9) and Anne-Marie King (#10) helped the Sparks close the gap. But everytime the Sparks scored Purple Reign had an answer. The biggest contributor this night was Katarina Tichopad (#23) who hit three 3PT's in the second half from NBA land and helped Purple Reign secure their first BWT Championship Title. Congratulations to Purple Reign, their captain Valerie Samson (#33) and the Finals/Playoffs MVP - Katarina Tichopad (#23) who finished the game with 12 points, 7 steals and 8 rebounds.

Congratulations and thank you to all players who participated in BWT’s Women’s Summer League 2010 and we look forward to seeing you all in BWT’s Women’s Fall League 2010 starting in September.

The game started off slowly as both teams wanted to moved the ball, get everyone ionvolved and then work on attacking the opponents in a focused and concerted approach. As the first half continued, the teams started to loosen up and find holes in the defense. The West All-Stars were led by Kirtsen Jones (#32) and the East All-Stars were led by Katarina Tichopad (#15). As the first half horn sounded, the score was 13-8 for the West.

As the second half got under way, the teams came out more aggressive. The East were led by the twin towers of Heather Owens (#3) and Anne-Marie King (#11). The West countered with a more balanced approach. Slashing the lane was Ange Mbikay (#3) and balancing that attack was the sharp shooting of Stefanie Pojrazova (#15). However, the most dominant player this evening was the West's Kirsten Jones (#32). Scoring at will in the paint and finishing her free throws at the the foul line, Jones scored 10 second half points as she led her West All-Stars to a narrow victory of 33-31.
