Men's Competitive Summer 2009 - League Championship Game

BWT Men's Competitive Summer League Champions Red Knights

BWT's Men's Summer League 2009 Championship Game was held this past Saturday August 15th, 2009 at the Air Canada Centre - Toronto Raptors Practice Court. The game featured Eastern Conference Champions – Assassins vs. the Western Conference Champions – Red Knights. The game was a highly competitive with both teams taking the lead throughout and no clear cut winner until the finals seconds ticked off the clock.

The Red Knights got out to a quick lead behind their captain and leader Simon Farine (#8). Scoring 9 quick points in the first half, Farine was instrumental in setting up his team and picking through the Assassins defense. Combining with Farine was the Red Knight's Matt Kokish (#11) who slashed through the defense and finished both from inside and outside. But the Assassins are a well tested playoff team and former League Champion. They did not get rattled with the quick start by Red Knights. Working the ball inside to their big man Phil Monroe (#0), the Assassins kept the game close throughout. Behind their leader, Nolan Gooding (#23) the Assassins started to disrupt the flow of the Red Knights and counter attack. As we reached the half way mark, the Red Knights led 32-29.

Once the second half got back underway, the Red Knights seasoned veterans started to come to life. Yannick Walcott (#21) helped lead the surge scoring 9 second half points and controlling the tempo. Working inside to their big men and outside to their shooters, Walcott kept the Assassins on their heels. But just as it seemed as the game was going to get out of control, back came the Assassins. Like they have done before in so many games, they started to hit their stride and found their range from 3PT land. Behind big 3-PT's from Gooding and Anthony Guada (#15), the Assassins were not going to go out without a fight. But with every key basket the Assassins hit, the Red Knights captain Simon Farine seemed to have an answer. Finishing with 8 points in the 2nd half, Simon made sure his team claimed the League Championship 58-52. Taking home the Playoffs MVP, was Farine ended the game with 17 points, 4 assists, 9 rebounds and 1 steal.

Congratulations and thank you to all players who participated in BWT'S Men's Summer League 2009 this year and we look forward to seeing you all in BWT’s Men's Fall League 2009 starting Sunday September 13th, 2009.

Men's Competitive Summer - All-Star Game

BWT Summer League 2009 Men's All Star Champions

BWT's Men's Summer League 2009 All-Star Game was held this past Saturday July 25th, 2009 at the Air Canada Centre - Toronto Raptors Practice Court at 2:30PM. The game featured the East All-Stars vs. the West All-Stars as well as a 3PT Contest at Halftime.

As the game got underway, both teams began to feel each other out and work to their strengths. The East All-Stars were led by Anthony Alexander (#11) and Charles Kissi (#21) slashing through the West defence. But the West All-Stars countered and broke out to a ten point lead behind baskets from Michael Allicock (#15) and working inside with Sheldon James (#21) and Vaughan Daley (#34). With every counter attack made by the East All-Stars, the West kept sending waves of players in to sustain the lead. By the time the half time buzzer went, the score was 41-29 for the West Division.

3-POINT CONTEST
At half-time, BWT's 3-Point Contest took place. In the first round, the 3PT contest featured head to head matchups between the top three 3-PT shooters in each division. From the East Division, the participants included Daniel Andrew (39.1%), Nijah Duncan (39.0%) and Josh Israelievitch (37.0%). From the West Division, the shooters included Nathaniel Mitchell (48.7%), Arun Kumar (41.7%) and Nigel Clarke (40.0%). After the first round, we had two players hit a total of 14 shots. It was the East’s Josh Israelievitch and the West’s Nathaniel Mitchell. In the second and final round, Nathaniel showed why he led his division and the league in 3-PT shooting at 48.7% as he continued to hit 12 3-PT’s with more than 20 seconds left to surpass Josh’s 11 3-PT’s made in the 2nd round. Congratulations to Nathaniel in becoming BWT’s Men’s Summer League - 3PT Contest Champion.

As the 2nd half got under way, the East All-Stars got back on track with a balanced scoring attack. With baskets from Kadeem Willis (#23), Wills Francis (#32) and Anthony Alexander (#11) once again, the East started to bridge the gap. But as the East started continued to breakdown the defence, the West was able to counter behind Nolan Gooding (#23) and a balanced stat line from Vaughan Daley (#34). Vaughan not only scored at key times, but he helped to distribute to his teammates and collect rebounds on both ends of the court. As the 2nd half winded down, the East had closed the gap to 3 points with 3.9 seconds left on the clock and the ball. As the time ticked down, the East had a half court shot to tie the game which back rimmed leaving the West Division All-Stars with the win. The All-Star Game MVP was awarded to Vaughan Daley for his complete game as he finished with 8 points, 6 assists, 9 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 block.

Congratulations and thank you to all players who participated in the All-Star Game and 3-Point Competition.
